A fine and original example of the Bavarian Military Merit Cross 3rd Class with Swords attributed to maker Weiss & Co. Ordenfabrik München.
Awarded for bravery and military merit in the Kingdom of Bavaria during times of war.
This decoration was the Kingdom of Bavaria’s equivalent to the Prussian Iron Cross, awarded to NCOs and enlisted men for acts of bravery or distinguished service in combat. The addition of crossed swords indicates the award was earned in the face of the enemy.
The cross features a crowned monogram of King Ludwig III on the obverse, and the Bavarian motto "MERENTI" (To the Deserving) on the reverse, symbolizing valor and recognition.
Historical Significance:
Issued during the First World War, the Military Merit Cross is one of the most iconic Bavarian military decorations. Its presence in any collection marks a connection to Imperial Germany’s richly varied military award system.
