Wehrmacht Wound Badge in Silver – "13" Gustav Brehmer (Tombak)
This is a Wehrmacht Wound Badge in Silver (Verwundetenabzeichen in Silber), awarded during the Second World War to German soldiers who had sustained three or four combat wounds.
Key Details:
- Material: Early high-quality Tombak construction (brass alloy), known for superior detail and weight compared to later zinc variants.
- Finish: Silver wash over a finely pebbled background, still partially intact with light age-related patina.
- Design: Features the iconic German Stahlhelm (helmet) with a swastika, placed above crossed swords, surrounded by a laurel wreath.
- Maker Marked: The reverse is clearly stamped with the number "13", which corresponds to the manufacturer Gustav Brehmer, Markneukirchen.
- Condition: Very fine with crisp detailing, no repairs, and a fully functional pin and catch system.
Historical Context:
- Instituted originally during World War I and reissued in 1939, the Wound Badge came in three grades:
- Black for 1–2 wounds,
- Silver for 3–4 wounds,
- Gold for 5 or more wounds or severe injuries such as loss of a limb or eye.
This silver grade badge was worn proudly on the left breast pocket of the uniform and is now a key piece for collectors of WWII German militaria, especially those focused on Wehrmacht awards or early war Tombak examples.
