General Assault Badge – Rudolf Souval (R.S.) Maker Marked
The General Assault Badge was instituted on June 1, 1940 by General Walther von Brauchitsch. It was awarded to non-infantry personnel of the Wehrmacht — such as combat engineers, artillerymen, anti-tank crews, and other supporting units — who participated in three or more assaults in support of infantry attacks.
Design Features:
- Obverse: A striking German eagle clutching a swastika, standing above a crossed bayonet and stick grenade, all encircled by a wreath of oak leaves — a symbol of German military tradition.
- Reverse: Maker-marked with “R.S.”, identifying Rudolf Souval, a known manufacturer of awards and medals located in Vienna, Austria.
- Construction: This example is a zinc-based badge, typical of mid-to-late war production, when resource shortages led to the replacement of earlier tombak or brass versions.
- Attachment: Classic vertical pin and hinge system, still intact.
Who Was Eligible?
The badge was awarded to personnel who:
- Participated in three separate combat actions.
- Supported infantry in offensive operations.
- Were not eligible for the Infantry Assault Badge.
